one year anniversary for my blog

last november i started my blog. the first post was called “today is buy nothing day in the united states.” (buy nothing day is today this year, so i am posting this today)

in commemoration of the fun times, blood, tears, and happiness, here is a recap of the year for my blog and my life


november and december 09 | i played chess on yahoo chess and chessmaster 9000. i watched southland tales. i read shoplifting from american apparel by tao lin. my poems were published at nthposition and cricket online review. i reviewed home alone 2

january 10 | i read almost all of tao lin’s blog archives. i wrote on my blog that being alive is “suffering that is beautiful.” my blog started to attract readers who know me in real life

february 10 | i wrote a long post about aesthetics and identity. i wrote a crappy blog post about eminem and deleted it. i wrote about robert grenier, and ron silliman linked to it, propelling me to 90 hits in one day... i wrote about a vegan-related news event

march 10 | i had a lot of online publications. i got acceptance letters from cal arts, california college of the arts, and columbia college chicago; i got rejection letters from other places. i posted visual poems on facebook and tagged 50 people in them

april 10 | i decided to go to columbia college chicago for an mfa. i visited chicago and read at the columbia poetry review release. i adopted a more minimalist tone on my blog and revised old posts to be consistent with it. i watched the documentary helvetica on my parents' netflix instant play

may 10 | i started reviewing books on my blog. i took a graphic design class that encouraged my already blossoming use of helvetica. i reviewed tao lin, and he linked to it, and my hits were over 100 in a day... i wrote poems by translating things between languages on google translate

june 10 | i redesigned my blog to basically my current design, and i released an ironic computer background. i deleted my content from november to april and created a post to archive some of it. i finished my last undergrad classes. i submitted a chapbook manuscript called i am like october when i am dead to h_ngm_n books. i moved to my parents’ houses

july 10 | i cultivated beans and sugar beets on my dad’s farm, and i got free books to review on my blog. i watched hgtv with my gf while eating veggie burgers and various grains. i wrote poems every day for 30 days with my friend j joseph kane. i visited chicago again and found an apartment with my gf. i went swimming in lake huron, then i moved to chicago

august 10 |
i had my 5 year anniversary with my gf. i released a video about the oppression of nonhuman animals. i met stephen tully dierks in person. i withdrew my chapbook manuscript from h_ngm_n. i started going to the library every morning to work on poetry and my blog. i posted image poems on my blog

september 10 | i read john keats’s love letters. i met brett gallagher in real life. i started school. i went to tao lin’s readings in chicago, and i hung out with stephen, brett, and tao. i read at ear eater 1. i decided to self-publish my chapbook in october so i could control the design and distribution

october 10 | i posted about submitting to literary journals, and ron silliman linked to it. i posted about publishing into the public domain, and leo babauta linked to it. i released my chapbook and many of my internet friends reviewed it. my blog hits increased a lot from september. i was an elephant for halloween

november 10 | john campbell linked to my chapbook. i opened my etsy store of ironic greeting cards. i helped stephen design pop serial 2. i helped organize poncho peligroso week 2010. i started a collaborative blog with brett gallagher called bloodhound gang. my image poems and greeting cards went slightly viral on fuck yeah helvetica
